The World Health Organization (WHO) has traditionally focused on the three major infectious diseases of HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria. However, viral hepatitis has also come to be recognized as an important health issue. Chronic viral hepatitis infection can usually progress asymptomatically and may lead to severe complications such as cirrhosis and liver cancer.
According to estimates by the WHO, approximately 350 million people worldwide are chronically infected with either hepatitis B virus or hepatitis C virus. Considering this fact, the first guidelines for chronic hepatitis C infection has been published in 2014, followed by the first guidelines for chronic hepatitis B infection in 2015. Subsequently, various guidelines and related publications have been released. Through these publications, WHO supports the development and implementation of national guidelines and strategies in each country.
